The core philosophy of lean manufacturing is enabling value, a concise term for customer needs, to flow without interruption from the producer to the Customer. By doing so lean enables more flexible and efficient use of capital machinery, skilled and unskilled labor, and frees up financial capital otherwise trapped in inventory and work in progress.

To enable this flow, lean manufacturing identifies the value in each product, maps how that value is created within an organization, and pursues the total elimination of any waste separating that value from the Customer. The result is ever increasing quality at a continuously decreasing cost. This virtuous cycle is known as Continuous Improvement.
